Junior high school science

Teaching junior high school students is challenging. These are students who often seem to dare you to teach them something. The reality is they are great adults in the making. I have found that they truly enjoy the hands-on learning that science provides. It gives them an outlet for their energy and allows these often insecure teens to talk to eachother about science. I have taught life science (7th) and physical science (8th) as per the requirements in California. I am very interested in hearing what others are doing in their schools with these students.

What types of content are you using to engage your students in science? Games? Simulations? Experiments?

Here in Kentucky in our school district, we have already adopted and implemented NGSS. We still have a ways to go to get our lesson plans and units to the top where students should be academically. I would be interested in any activities for 8th grade science for NGSS.
