Big Boxes - Not Necessarily Better Deals

Just like Kramer on Seinfeld, some folks cannot resist the siren’s song of warehouse or club shopping. Who wouldn’t want quadruple size or multi-pack versions of their favorite grocery item? The question to ask yourself is, “Are you really getting a better value?”

Many times if you look at the cost per ounce you pay for the same product at the bulk stores compared to your local grocery store, you may find you’re only getting more of an item, but not paying less. And if you can use coupons at your grocery store and not at the warehouse store, the difference is even greater.

You also need to consider if you will actually consume or use the volume of the item you are purchasing before it goes bad, or you and your family tire of eating it. I often wonder, “Who has a refrigerator big enough to store gallon size condiments once opened?”

Here are some ways to be a smart bulk shopper:

  1. Look for ways to save on your membership fees, such as the NEA MB Costco Membership Discount.
  2. Sign up for warehouse store online coupons, if available.
  3. Share large quantities and containers of produce with another family or friend. For the same dollar amount spent, you can get a bigger variety.
  4. Always check the store flyer for specials. There may be a special deal at your local store, not advertised nationally, for an item they have a smaller quantity of or don’t offer regularly.
  5. If you have the space, then buy seasonal items when they are in season, and usually less expensive, and freeze or store them for future use.

And remember, nobody needs a gallon of mayonnaise. Really.
