What is wrong in Education Today?

For starters the pay for teachers stinks. Can you believe what we pay our teachers and expect them to produce the best product. Used car salesmen can make more money. And we ask why the system is broken?? Starting pay for K-12 teachers should be 75K and it should top out over 15Ok. And yes, teachers should be tested if they are going to be paid good money. Until then, well I guess we can expect another 20 years of down trending.

  2. Your points are valid. Yes, the pay stinks, but there are ways to make more and stay in teaching. For example, http://www.cashforcreations.com is new web site for teachers to earn money and get their original ideas for visual aids made professionally. One could get their National Boards and mentor. Of course, we can all tutor students. I would much rather be teaching or flying than selling cars. (I like to fly too, but renting those little planes cost lots of $$$ :) If the pay was 150K, I could fly more.

  4. Michael, I agree. Teachers should get paid more. We work really hard to educate the future adults of this country. I hope this next question is not too personal, but what is the starting salary pay in Florida? I work in Southern California. The starting salary at my school site for someone with a BA is 38K. Each year we negotiate a pay raise. The budget is so tight, were lucky to get 2%. What is it like in Florida? Carolina in SoCal.

  5. Ms. Moreno,

FL is no better. Pay is the issue! When starting pay is 75K per year we will see movement in the profession. In Miami it is difficult getting a good secretary for 50K per year. The question is, why are parent so happy with teachers that spend all day with their kids and have a starting pay in the 35K range. Parents should be beaning on the Gov’s door demanding nothing but the best for our children.

  6. I am shocked at how little play this blog gets. I though all teachers were upset over pay?

  7. When we find a way to house criminals for less than 35K a year the states will never have enough money to pay teachers more. I think it is a crime that we spend 35K a year on each Michigan prisoner and only 7K per student. Priorities seem very messed up in stat financing.

  9. While pay is a MAJOR issue, I don’t think much will change until we hold parents accountable. I can be the best teacher in the world, but if a student in my class is wondering if his mom or dad is going to be there when he/she comes home from school, if he/she is going to have dinner, or if he/she is going to have to take care of younger siblings, not much can change in the classroom. Until some parents start caring about education and showing their children the need to have a good one, I’m afraid we’re spinning our wheels. I’ve worked in too many schools where it is just free babysitting for the parents, they take a very limited role in their child’s education.

  10. I’m surprised this doesn’t get more attention too. If every time someone started a blog it notified people in email, I think it would get more attention.
