May 10, 2011April 26, 2011Home Remedies For ScabiesMany people who are looking for home remedies for scabies usually end up here. April 25, 2011why you became an educatorEvery teacher I have has the pleasure of talking to has one meaning full story to them and most of them are about teachers they have had that make them want to be teachers. One person makes a difference in April 19, 2011January 9, 2011Bill Gates thinks something is going to die too.
Bill Gates thinks something is going to die too. No, it’s not physical books like Nicholas Negroponte - instead, Gates thinks the idea of young adults having to go to universities in order to get an education is going to go away relatively soon. Well, provided they’re self-motivated learners. “Five years from now on the web for free you’ll be able to find the best lectures in the world,” Gates said at the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe, CA today. “It will be better than any single university,” he continued. He believes that no matter how you came about your knowledge, you should get credit for it. Whether it’s an MIT degree or if you got everything you know from lectures on the web, there needs to be a way to highlight that. He made sure to say that educational institutions are still vital for children, K-12. He spoke glowingly about charter schools, where kids can spend up to 80% of their time deeply engaged with learning. But college needs to be less “place-based,” according to Gates. Well, except for the parties, he joked. But his overall point is that it’s just too expensive and too hard to get these upper-level educations. And soon place-based college educations will be five times less important than they are today. One particular problem with the education system according to Gates is text books. Even in grade schools, they can be 300 pages for a book about math. “They’re giant, intimidating books,” he said. “I look at them and think: what on Earth is in there?” According to Gates, our text books are three times longer than the equivalents in Asia. And yet they’re beating us in many ways with education. The problem is that these things are built by committee, and more things are simply added on top of what’s already in there. Gates said that technology is the only way to bring education back under control and expand it. November 11, 2010Drugs in the schoolToday a growing concern for many young Americans is the use of drugs. It is a growing problem that has become more dangerous as time has gone on. Kids today are not just sticking to marijuana, the drugs they have become daily users of are way more hardcore. I have seen kids in the locker room at school doing heroine. The teachers have no idea and if they do, they are just letting it happen. Schools need to start cracking down on drug use. Would it be a good idea for schools to start drug testing? Some private schools have already implemented this. How could public schools do the same? Veterans DayI thought that school was not in session on Veterans Day. Is this new this year that there is school today? I hope that all the educators are informing their students of what Veterans Day is for and are taking a moment to aknowledge all of the men and women who are fighting for our freedom. I think that during this time it is very important to thank all of the troops that risk their lives for our country. I think that it is important that children understand how much these people risk for us. September 29, 2010Online Teaching Jobs For StudentsFor suitably qualified and competent students, entry level, online teaching jobs (such as online tutoring and homework supervision) can be a boon. Not only can it bring students a bit of vital extra income but it can provide young people at the start of their professional careers with the opportunity to enhance their teaching and communication skills. An online teaching job or tutoring post can be useful for any student planning a career as an educator, with evidence of teaching ability and a commitment to helping others a valuable addition to any young person’s CV. Any student looking to create an online tutoring job for his or herself will have to plan carefully. Though some people are natural-born teachers, students would be well-advised to gain at least some experience before applying for online jobs. Volunteering, assisting qualified teachers and any other hands-on engagement with learners will pay dividends for people starting out in an teaching jobs. The important thing for students who want an online tutoring job to recognize is that they probably have a lot to learn and should not over-reach themselves. An undergraduate degree in a subject does not make someone an expert teacher and over-confidence can be fatal for all involved. It’s best to start small and pay attention to developing one’s nascent teaching abilities. When starting out in the world of online tutors, students with a liking for children and young people, and who have suitable knowledge in a subject, are well situated to offer help with homework. Though this may sound simple, students will have to work at it. It may require becoming familiar with the syllabus, for example. Tutors will need to engage with the reasons that school pupils (or their parents) seek help and structure the help they provide accordingly. Some parents will enlist tutors mainly to help their school age children stick to a productive routine. Others will hire tutors because they are aware that their child needs some extra input in a particular subject. Whatever the reason, tutors will need to know how to gear their homework supervision to meet that need. Online tutoring jobs and teaching opportunities demand more than simple subject knowledge. Anyone wanting to take on online teaching jobs will have to uphold a certain standard of professionalism. Young people venturing into online tutoring must recognize that they are taking on a commitment and responsibility to an individual’s education that must be taken seriously - no dropping out if the going gets tough or something better comes along. It’s also worth remembering that, though you may be great with kids, you will also have to deal in a professional manner with parents who are likely to be older than you are and who may have great ambitions for their children’s future. For any beginner in an online teaching job, the solution may be to work through an agency, at least to start with, so that there is guidance, back-up and support available just in case any problems or differences of opinion arise. Online tutoring and teaching jobs are not something any student should rush into, but for students who are committed, responsible and willing to work at honing their abilities, online teaching jobs can be rewarding on many levels.
